Zhoushan Dao (30°05'N., 122°06'E.), the principal island in Chou shan Ch'un tao and the largest island of the several islands and numerous islets S of Huang ta Yang, has a largely mountainous surface alternating with several well cultivated coastal plains and an irregular much indented coastline of which the N and NE sections are fronted by extensive areas of drying mud flats, large areas of shoal water, and numerous smaller islands, islets, and scattered offshore rocks.
