SAVO ISLAND

Savo Island (9°08'S., 159°49'E.), which lies in the passage between the W extremities of Nggela Island and Guadalcanal Island, is a wooded volcanic island with several peaks, the highest of which, nearly in the center, has an elevation of 485m. A narrow steep to reef fringes the island, and there is a steep white beach at the N end. Several villages and a mission station are situated on the island. There are coconut groves and some agriculture.
