The bottom shelves steeply around the island except outside the reefs fronting the bay where there is a larger area with depths of less than 37m. 10.95 Montagu Island (58°25'S., 26°22'W.) is the largest of the South Sandwich Islands. It lies 34 miles S of Saunders Island and is reported to be larger than charted.
