Boat traffic begins to thin dramatically once you’re north of Pointe au Baril on the east shore. And north of Byng Inlet, the cottages are few and far between and the land for the most part is either First Nations reserve, Crown land, or provincial park. After a short run on the small craft route north of Byng Inlet, cruisers with nerve dive into Black Bay, or tuck behind nearby Golden Sword Island. But holding behind Golden Sword is dicey, and there are several fine anchorages just off the route to the north, along the south side of Sandy Bay. This is one of them. There’s an outstanding beach on the north side of the bay, a short dinghy ride away.
