Manaus (3°08'S., 60°01'W.) (World Port Index No. 12560) stands on high ground overlooking the Rio Negro, 8 miles from its confluence with the Amazon River and 925 miles from Belem. The river abreast of the city is 1.5 miles wide with depths up to 45m. The S bank is low and marshy. Drying mud banks line both sides of the river.
