LEAF BASIN

Ice.Open water occurs in Leaf Basin and Leaf Passage before Ungava Bay is free of ice; however, the strong tidal currents cause ice jams in the approaches. Passage into Leaf Passage is seldom possible before the middle of July. Freezeup in Leaf Bay and Leaf Passage occurs later than in Leaf Basin, again due to the strong currents in these areas. Ice begins to form in Leaf Basin in early December, but not until late December in Leaf Passage and Leaf Bay; stretches of water may remain open throughout the winter.
