"Elph Bay" Moon River
Moon River has several routes into Massassauga Provincial Park. Accessible to the east of Sans Souci Island, Georgian Bay, at marker C179 follow the alternate charted route keeping Dowell Rock to port. Several routes are laid out on the chart.
A favourite anchorage is in a little previously unnamed bay - now on our charts as Elph Bay (N045° 10.238', W 080° 03.314') (Eleanor and Phil’s Bay). We tuck right down at the head of the bay in behind a 3-storey high rock which, from the entrance, appears to be as far as you can go. But in behind the rock is a lovely anchorage in about 8-10 feet of water, well protected from all winds coming off Georgian Bay. In 2006 we were not aware of a storm on Georgian Bay that produced 12 ft waves not more than a couple of miles from where we anchored.
To find this anchorage, follow markers on the chart from C179 past Hewson Island to Starboard and take the right charted channel bending around Crooked Island to starboard. Pass Fry Pt. to Dudgeon Pt. The entrance to Elph Bay is reached by entering the large bay to starboard opposite the marker on your port side at Burgess Pt. The best anchorage is behind the large charted rock at the end of the bay but the hold is also good in the shore area (to your starboard as you approach the rock).
There is a large area of lakes/inlets on the chart further along this bay - some areas are not “charted” - but we have seen boats coming and going so there must be some accessibility to these back areas as well. A great place for dinghy exploration.
As well as the many “Designated Overnighting Bays”, there are pitons in some of the rocks for shore-tying.
Designated camping spots must be reserved through the Provincial Park Services but anchorages and pitons are 1st come/1st served.
On Sans Souci Island you will find the world-famous Henry's Fish Restaurant, a must stop, as well as gas, and a small grocery store for essentials. In 2006 the PORTS book for this area listed Henry's as having showers. They have overnighting docks but the showers have been closed.
