ACHILL ISLAND

Achill Island (5353'N., 958'W.), separated from the mainland E by Achill Sound, is the largest island off the Irish coast and rises to an elevation of 668m at Slievemore on its N side. A steep range of cliffs borders most of the W coast and terminates at Achill Head. Between the S extremity of the island and Achill Head, about 12 miles NW, the coast is in dented by several small exposed bays. Temporary anchorage can be taken by small vessels in some of these bays.
